WITNESSES
Witnesses pair a dated iPod with a worn security monitor once used on Budapest Metro Line 2. Despite their obsolete technology, together they form a sharply relevant reflection on today’s nonstop media flow. The monitor’s persistent 15.6 kHz tone — a result of its failing electronics — sets the piece’s uneasy atmosphere.
Across the weakening CRT screen, rapid clips of news, entertainment, violence, and everyday distraction appear in bursts often too quick to fully register. Their broken, flickering rhythm recalls the experience of doom-scrolling, showing how an older system can still mirror the speed and overload of our digital habits.
A simple smiley face painted on the screen acts as a reminder of how easily constant stimulation is softened by a familiar, friendly symbol. Although the devices belong to another era, Witnesses suggest that the cycle of attention, distraction, and emotional numbness has changed far less than we think — only the message looks crispier.
